Psychiatric care for adults across Hawaiʻi

OhanaPsych provides psychiatric care for makua (adults) throughout Hawaiʻi — by secure telehealth statewide or in office, and with same-day crisis visits (when available) when you need to be seen now. We accept Medicaid (QUEST), Medicare, and most commercial plans, so good care is within reach. This page is an overview of the adult care we provide and how to get started.

What we help adults with

We care for the full range of adult mental-health conditions, including anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD and trauma, adult ADHD, and serious mental illness such as psychosis and schizophrenia — across the whole span of adulthood, from young adults to kūpuna (elders). When objective data helps clarify attention, memory, or thinking concerns, we also offer neurocognitive testing.

How we approach adult care

We start from lōkahi — balance across the connected parts of your life — and treat you in the context of your ‘ohana (family), work, and community rather than as a diagnosis alone. Care is evidence-based and collaborative: depending on what you’re facing, that may mean psychotherapy, medication, or both, and we build a plan you actually agree with. Brief screening tools, now recommended for adults by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for both depression and anxiety, help us understand what’s going on and track your progress.

When treatment involves a controlled medication (for example, certain ADHD medications), we prescribe responsibly: not in a one-off or crisis visit, and only within an established, ongoing relationship so we can monitor benefit, side effects, and safety over time, case by case at provider discretion.

Insurance for adults — Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial

We welcome Hawaiʻi QUEST / Med-QUEST (Medicaid) — including AlohaCare, HMSA QUEST Integration, ‘Ohana Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan — plus Medicare and most commercial plans. Language assistance is available so cost and language aren’t barriers to getting care.

Telehealth statewide and same-day crisis

Most visits happen by secure video, anywhere in Hawaiʻi — evaluation, therapy, and medication management all work well remotely. Need to be seen now? Learn about our same-day crisis care.

One more note on access: as we complete the final stages of becoming a Rural Health Clinic (RHC), telehealth for mental-health care is here to stay with us. Under Medicare’s rural-health rules, RHCs are permanently authorized to provide behavioral and mental-health care by telehealth — including into your home, anywhere in Hawaiʻi — not under the temporary flexibilities that expire and must be renewed. (Prescribing of controlled medications still follows the separate Ryan Haight Act and DEA rules.) For our patients, that means dependable, lasting telehealth access to the care you need.

Wherever you live, OhanaPsych is your statewide practice. We provide care across the entire state of Hawaiʻi by telehealth, reaching every island — Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Niʻihau. If you would rather be seen in person, you have that option at our offices in Hilo and Honolulu.

Brief screening (96127)

As part of getting started — and to track your progress over time — we use brief, validated questionnaires that are administered, auto-scored, and documented on the CNS Vital Signs platform and billed under code 96127 (brief emotional/behavioral assessment). For adults, that includes the PHQ-9 for depression, the GAD-7 for anxiety, the DASS (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale), and the Zung self-rating depression and anxiety scales (CNS Vital Signs, n.d.). Each takes only a few minutes and gives your provider objective information to guide care.

When to reach out — and when it’s an emergency

If anxiety, low mood, trauma, attention, or another concern is getting in the way of your work, relationships, or daily life, it’s worth reaching out — you don’t have to be in crisis to deserve care. New patients are welcome; call (808) 777-9460 or start your request online.

If you or someone you love is thinking about suicide or self-harm, get help right away. Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org). In Hawaiʻi, Hawaiʻi CARES is available by calling or texting 988, or at 808-832-3100 / 800-753-6879. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
