Most of the people we serve in this part of our practice are covered by Medicaid (QUEST), and we accept it. We meet you by telehealth across the state or in person, and we walk alongside you so you can live and thrive to the fullest of your ability.

Long-acting injectable medications — and why they can help

A long-acting injectable (LAI) is an antipsychotic medication given as a shot that releases slowly over weeks, instead of a pill taken every day. For many people that is a relief: no daily reminder, no pillbox, no missed doses on a hard day.

The evidence is encouraging. Across dozens of studies, people taking long-acting injectables were less likely to relapse or be hospitalized than those on daily pills (Kishimoto et al., 2021). National guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association recommend offering an injectable to people who prefer one, or who have had a hard time taking medication consistently (Keepers et al., 2020). It is not the right fit for everyone — but for many, it makes staying well far easier.

Delivered to your home, on any island

We welcome people who need injectable medications, and we work to make them easy to get. Through our pharmacy partnerships, we can arrange for your injectable medication to be delivered and given right in your own home — on any island. No arranging rides, no missing a dose because the clinic is far away. The care comes to you.

We partner with your care team

You are not meant to do this alone, and neither are we. We work hand in hand with case-management agencies and your support team, coordinating care so nothing falls through the cracks and you have what you need to stay stable and well.

Discharging from Hawaiʻi State Hospital

We also welcome people being discharged from Hawaiʻi State Hospital, and we work alongside forensic treatment teams to support a safe, steady transition. Our goal is to help you hold onto your progress and remain — and thrive — in your own community.

Getting care by telehealth

Most of our care is delivered by secure video, and your injectable medication can be given at home, so distance does not have to stand between you and steady treatment. Some parts of care — such as certain controlled medications — still follow the federal Ryan Haight Act and DEA rules and may call for an in-person step; we will tell you clearly if that applies to you.

Lasting access by telehealth

As we complete the final stages of becoming a Rural Health Clinic (RHC), telehealth for mental-health care is here to stay with us. Under Medicare’s rural-health rules, RHCs are permanently authorized to provide behavioral and mental-health care by telehealth — including into your home, anywhere in Hawaiʻi — not under the temporary flexibilities that expire and must be renewed. For our patients, that means dependable, lasting telehealth access to the care you need.

Wherever you live, OhanaPsych is your statewide practice. We provide care across the entire state of Hawaiʻi by telehealth, reaching every island — Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Niʻihau. If you would rather be seen in person, you have that option at our offices in Hilo and Honolulu.

Insurance — Medicaid (QUEST) welcome

We accept Hawaiʻi QUEST / Med-QUEST (Medicaid) — AlohaCare, HMSA QUEST Integration, ʻOhana Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan — plus Medicare and most commercial insurance. If you are not sure whether your plan is accepted, our team will check before your first visit.
